Triangle Global Health Consortium

Innovation through Collaboration

Please share your thoughts on tapping into Women's Networks

Follow-up to Jan. 28 breakfast discussion on unsafe abortion (Merrill Wolf, Ipas):

One topic that came up during the discussion following Barbara Crane’s presentation on Unsafe Abortion as a Key Global Health Issue is the need for all of us working on women’s health to do a better job of tapping into the power of women’s networks to inform and empower them. This is especially important in areas where women have poor or no access to health systems. Discussion participants mentioned several relevant experiences that have proved effective, including disseminating information about contraception and other aspects of reproductive health at women-only venues such as beauty parlors and through community intermediaries such as local “wise women”, and incorporating messages about the availability of legal abortion into traditional coffee ceremonies in Ethiopia. Others suggested that self-help mechanisms such as women’s microcredit groups might offer other opportunities or models for reaching women and facilitating their helping each other address critical health issues.

What experiences or studies can you share (from your organization or others) that would contribute to our mutual goal of tapping into the power of women’s networks to achieve more positive health outcomes?

It is timely for those of us in the Triangle to develop a network even virtually about women's issues globally. Half the Sky has started quite a dialogue and the showing March 4th will continue it. I hope a breakfast discussion could take us to another level and raise important questions that we might be able to address within a rich network of expertise. Please let me know if you want to be part of a panel.

Hi Wendee,

Can you tell us more about the panel? FHI has recently started a gender working group and would be interested in contributing to this discussion.

Thanks!

I was asked to just start the dialogue since I was part of the global health consortium in the beginning. i hope you can ask your group to come so we can talk about the issues and what we are doing, can do from here to places in the world inspired by 'Half the Sky' and the showing Thursday night. I am not planning a panel of speakers so all who come will have a chance to talk and share their work. Do you have any other suggestions? the evite is coming out this week and the topics are very broad.
