The Links Between Animal Abuse and Family Violence:

Implications for the Medical Professions

Learning objectives:

At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  1. Recognize the roles of pets in contemporary families and how these emotional relationships are exploited in family violence situations.
  2. Apply greater awareness of the implications of animal abuse and neglect to the care of patients in hospital and private practice settings.
  3. Describe the significance of animals as a factor in individual and public health, the improvement of social capital, and in the prevention of youth, family and community violence.
  4. Apply strategies and resources to utilize the “One Health” principle to better protect domestic violence and child abuse survivors, and neglected elders, by addressing animal welfare issues.
