Innovation through Collaboration

Around the world, countries and communities are engaged in a
struggle against mounting global health challenges, including
HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases, maternal and child health,
cardiovascular disease, the consequences of climate change, food
security, and the need to strengthen health systems. Growing
economies and increasing wealth have also led to chronic illnesses
becoming a global burden for both developed and developing worlds.
Answers are within reach, but they require the effective
implementation and mobilization of science and technology. In
response to this critical need, the Triangle Global Health
Consortium was established to capitalize on the global health
expertise of organizations across North Carolina.
The Consortium’s mission is to establish North Carolina as an
international center for research, training, education, advocacy
and business dedicated to improving the health of the world's
communities. It will seek to engage academic, governmental,
business and nonprofit organizations in this collaborative
effort.
The founding members of the Consortium are Duke University, Family
Health International, IntraHealth International, North Carolina
Biotechnology Center, North Carolina State University, RTI
International, and University of North Carolina–Chapel Hill.
By operating as a global health intellectual hub in North Carolina,
the Consortium will expand communication among individuals and
institutions through regional and national meetings, workshops,
lectures, and web-based modalities—all focused on global health
issues and advancements.
With an emphasis on collaboration, the Consortium aims to increase
the pace of discovery by maximizing the intellectual capital of the
Triangle’s leading companies, universities and research
institutions and by generating innovative scientific, educational,
and service programs.
The Consortium will work to support area colleges and universities
through student mentoring and teaching programs. In tandem, it will
promote opportunities for undergraduates and graduate and
professional students to become involved in service and research
projects with Consortium members. This investment will pay lasting
dividends as more young people expand their global knowledge and
join the ranks of tomorrow’s health professionals, researchers,
teachers and leaders.
Ultimately, the TGHC will grow the already
>$2 billion global/public health industry in
North Carolina by contributing leadership and a well-structured
series of strategic programs to jointly establish the Research
Triangle and North Carolina as a recognized leader in global
health.
